H1. - When are you leaving?
f2h1gg: Wife: When are you leaving? Me: Soon. Well soonish. I’m in the middle of something and when I finish it I’ll leave. Shouldn’t take long. Wife: That means nothing to me. What does that mean? Me: Well… I’m trying not to be an ass-hole, seriously I don’t want it to sound like an ass-hole, cause I don’t mean it that way and say ‘The sooner I get off the phone the sooner I can leave.’ ...

Matt Galligan: Music to work by →
mattgalligan: I constantly listen to music during my work day, but I’m constantly struggling to find the right balance between loud, soft, fast, slow, distracting, not-distracting, etc. Inspired by today’s rainy day in San Francisco I’ve put together a Chillwave station on Pandora. You can listen to it … This is really making the afternoon much better. Excellent stuff, Matt!

Kirk Love: 30 Days of Not Complaining. →
kirklove: I’m going to try something. I’m not going to complain for 30 days. No petty nitpicking. No buts (not even in writing) and no, “I didn’t like it.” I came to this idea on vacation when upon arriving in San Francisco for the first time in my life I literally said, “It’s nice, but it’s no New York.”… Awesome idea! And good luck, Kirk…

End of An Era
I stood in a long line on an extremely hot June afternoon, waiting for the original iPhone. I got into the line around 2 and waited until the store opened at 6. I finally was allowed in around 6:30 or so and was one of the lucky ones. It was an amazing piece of hardware / software. I haven’t upgraded to any of the new versions, always having the original one. No real reason for me to...

bijan sabet: The end of the app store innocence? →
bijan: We have a number of startups in our portfolio that build iOS and Android apps. To my knowledge, none of them pay for traffic to their apps. But they constantly get pitched by different 3rd parties with the promise of better exposure and distribution in the app store. Some offer to buy low cost… This is one of the goals at Chomp. Making the playing field a bit more even for...

Working From Home Watching Sports Week
This is definitely the week for WFHWS, soon to be a hashtag somewhere! Today and tomorrow, we have the quarterfinals of the Champions League and then Thursday and Friday, the first two rounds of The Masters. A comparable week was just a few weeks ago when you had Champions League action and then the first two days of March Madness. Yay for laptops, wireless and long-lasting batteries!

Lessons Learned
The week has been tough on me.. well that isn’t really true since the week isn’t some evil mastermind, holding a white cat, sitting in a tower somewhere, causing all sorts of trouble. No, the week has been tough because I tried to cut some corners and fell flat on my face. I know better than trying to push something to production without doing a load test. I know better than...

ShowMeFavs
I tend to use my Twitter favorites as a home for quotes, thoughts or anything I can use for inspiration or thinking or sometimes a needed self butt-kicking. I wanted to have a way of having them pop up from time to time so I wrote a little Python script which grabs a random favorite and displays it in the Terminal. I was going to get it working with Growl and I hope to eventually but it was...

dwillis: Eighty-plus years ago, a grandmother I never knew sailed from County Mayo to New York for a better life. She raised five children mostly by herself after settling in Philadelphia and made it possible for my father to be the first in his family to attend college. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Bridget Lavin. I wish you could have seen your great-granddaughter ask her mother, “Mommy, are you...

BackType's ElephantDB
nosql: I didn’t know BackType’s ElephantDB is open source and available on GitHub, same as their Cascalog the Clojure based query language for Hadoop. Original title and link: BackType’s ElephantDB (NoSQL databases © myNoSQL) It’s ok not to know since it was just released today (2/18)…

Drive vs. Startup Life
Every month I try to pick up Success magazine. This month, there is an interview with Daniel Pink, author of books such as Drive and A Whole New Mind, along with plenty of magazine articles. The great thing about Success is that each issue comes with a CD which expands on the magazine with longer interviews. It’s great to have in the car when you are stuck in traffic or transporting the...

First Day
I started a new chapter in my life today. I boarded a plane in Burbank around 9:30 in the morning and by noon, I was ringing the doorbell at Chomp’s office. Chomp is a startup, trying to make sense of the explosion of apps for smart phones. I’m going to help make their search engine the best it can be. It’s an interesting problem to try and solve since there isn’t a...

The science of the seasonal beverage
caro: Pumpkin spice lattes are now on the menu at the Starbucks in Freeport, ME. Are they being served everywhere in the country as of 9/1, or are they rolled out first to parts of the country that will likely be chilliest? I’m curious as to the answer. Well it definitely isn’t chilly here in SoCal and they were available to I’m guessing it is the first of September.

Oh, the places we've gone.
ranajune: One year ago this week, I sat in this exact same coffee shop on Sand Hill Road, scared out of my mind, rushing to put the finishing touches on a deck and present it to people who could make or break me based on a 15 minute meeting. Now I find myself sitting here again, sipping a soy latte and working on a proposal for an amazing ad campaign that will run in amazing applications,...
